September 2016 - Gene Wilder Tribute, Sausage Party, Kubo and the Two Strings, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, The Magnificent Seven, and Ben-Hur

Hi Everyone,

Here's a trailers playlist for the major movies opening in the UK in September 2016:-  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrxndNRRcUE&list=PLsYqS17xRd6dSwC2ZlOb6keLYpZ64h0x4

As I sit down to write this page (29th August 2016) sad news is coming in that veteran comedy actor Gene Wilder has died – aged 83. Apparently, he had suffered from the effects of Alzheimer's Disease for some time, but had withheld the information - as he didn't want to upset the public; especially young fans of the iconic character Willie Wonka (whom he had played on screen in 1971).

For those unfamiliar with his work as a comic actor (also writer and director) Wilder's most celebrated roles include major parts in the films of Mel Brooks: The Producers, Young Frankenstein, and Blazing Saddles. Other films he wrote and directed himself – such as The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother. Wilder also starred alongside comedian Richard Prior in four movies – commencing with Silver Streak in 1976. Despite poor reviews, I enjoyed the cheesy, madcap Haunted Honeymoon in which Wilder was accompanied by his then wife Gilda Radner. Although my favourite of Wilder's films is The Producers, I fondly remember watching Young Frankenstein on TV with my family many years ago; laughing our heads off and splitting our sides with laughter! Happy memories.

The big comedy opening this month is of course Sausage Party. It has the interesting premise of “food” characters finding out they are due to be cooked and eaten. But, with a 15 rating in the UK, this might be a cartoon – but it's not one for younger children. The young ones will be happy to note, however, that the Laika studios animated film Kubo and the Two Strings also comes out this month. There is also a live action film - based on the book by Ransom Riggs – called Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Other highlights of the month include two remakes: Ben-Hur and The Magnificent Seven.
