May 2015

Dear friends,

Last week I went to see A Little Chaos starring and directed by Alan Rickman. More accurately, Rickman (who portrays Louis XIV of France) is really the co-star here; though he is excellent as the king. The lead actors are Kate Winslet and Matthias Schoenaerts and they both play landscape gardeners. Winslet is a little more sure of herself in her role than Schoenaerts is – but he's not at all bad either. (Overall, the film is a tad on the slow side but quite enjoyable.)

Schoenaerts (born in 1977 in Antwerp, Belgium) has really come to prominence this year. His first movie Daens (1992) was followed by some thirty or so other film and TV appearances over the next twenty years. But he really started to make his mark in the notable foreign-language films Bullhead (2011) and Rust and Bone (2012). Already this year he has starred in two international releases Suite Française and A Little Chaos. He also features heavily in Far From the Madding Crowd - the Thomas Hardy adaptation which hits UK cinema screens in May 2015. So he seems to be making a name for himself as the romantic male lead in period dramas.

Matthias Schoenaerts' emergence into the public's consciousness reminds me of Alicia Vikander; the Swedish actress who has also made a huge splash this year. Her 2015 UK releases have been Son of a Gun, Testament of Youth, Seventh Son, and Ex Machina. Cinemagoers can also look forward to seeing her in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. this August. Quite a résumé.

Read a little about Far From the Madding Crowd (and a host of other movies) in the latest edition of my free “new releases” movie newsletter - Big Films Monthly.

I hope to see Far From the Madding Crowd - as well as Avengers: Age of Ultron and Tomorrowland - in the coming weeks. Maybe other stuff too. Whatever you decide to go and see – (as ever) I wish you a very good time at the movies. Happy viewing!
