April 2016 - Odeon Limitless, The Huntsman: Winter's War, The Jungle Book, and Captain America: Civil War

Hi Everyone,

I'm writing this on the sad day that the death of British comedy legend Ronnie Corbett was announced. My condolences to his friends and family. I shall be hopping over to YouTube in a few minutes to watch the classic Two Ronnies sketch “four candles”, also the brilliant one where a Mastermind contestant answers the previous question, and any other gems they have up there. Rest in peace Ronnie.

So, yes folks! It's that time again. Time for me to publish another movie releases newsletter. My little nettop – the Acer: Revo One RL85 – has been the computer I've compiled it on this time. (For anyone who's interested; the main software I use is Coreldraw). I've been quite impressed with the RL85. It performs most tasks well and is fine loading internet pages. Just occasionally it can't cope – but that's if it's dealing with a couple of major programs running at the same time. As you'd expect with an Intel Celeron 2957u 1.4Ghz processor (and 4GB of DDR3 RAM) it struggles with complicated graphics. It took five minutes, for example, to save my completed newsletter; but it got there in the end. Every now and again the computer lets out a little hard drive "tweeting" noise - but this is not that bothersome. This compact PC is quite good – as long as you don't need it for really professional type graphics and heavy video processing.

It's an exciting time for regular moviegoers in the UK. One of the two major cinema chains - Odeon Cinemas - has introduced a new “Limitless” scheme; allowing members to watch an unlimited number of films for £17.99 a month. This is a good deal if you tend to go to the pictures three or four times a month (or more). The other big chain - Cineworld - has had a similar scheme for a few years now; and this is called "Unlimited" and currently costs £16.90 per month. Presumably these endeavours are an attempt to rival “stay at home" services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime. But I think there's still a great joy to be had in going out to a cinema with a bunch of mates, catching the latest blockbuster or art house release, and munching your way through a humongous tub of popcorn. Happy days! And what do we have on offer this month?

New releases in the UK in April 2016 include The Huntsman: Winter's War, The Jungle Book, and Captain America: Civil War. Although many were “iffy” about Snow White and the Huntsman, I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to this second film of the franchise. The Jungle Book is a life-action and CGI hybrid from Walt Disney Studios and, if the trailers are anything to go by, it looks pretty incredible. For Marvel fans Captain America: Civil War needs little by way of introduction. Just go along and soak up all the action. Enjoy!
